I discovered art journaling in 2017, when a good friend invited me to attend a class at a local community center. I was drawn to the ethos of collage immediately, which is to take yesterday’s discards and repurpose them for artistic expression.

Mixed media allows for an expressive arts process. One layer’s images and meaning build on the next and allow incorporation of poetry and symbolic elements from my dream life. Tearing out images and getting my hands sticky with glue are therapeutic.

Prior to art journaling, I studied fine art photography at Rochester Institute of Technology. My photography often involves the use of reflections to create juxtapositions and surreal elements, such as bringing the outdoors in, or vice versa.

In 2018, I found myself waiting on results from the MRI that revealed multiple sclerosis. Art journaling provided a way to process feelings that I didn’t know how to describe in words.

I started teaching art journaling at the start of the pandemic to others adjusting to a new reality. I’ve taught the class online to colleagues and students.

In my professional life, I work as a clinical counselor and believe in the connection between creativity and wellbeing.
